Our library system has two big sales a year, and I used to go regularly--am hoping to attend them again someday, which would symbolize the end of austerity budgeting for our household as well as tacit permission to stuff the house with even more books.

That series with Grandma and a fire sounds intriguing. Originally, they intended to build a bigger, better, spiffier library. There were delays when the planning stage immediately shot over budget and the whole thing got stalled between angry budgeters and distraught planners, and then, well, the economy disemboweled itself. Much as I love books and libraries, I'm a little more sympathetic to the taxpayers than to the librarians on this one. And apart from the frightening economic situation, I've grown skeptical of library "needs." There has been a lot of library expansion locally in the past few years, and I've noticed that it rarely seems to be that the new additions are book-related; they tend to be computer labs, meeting rooms, office space, etc.Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08937427776827933594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5609001996482522007.post-47002037893921536562011-08-05T13:24:01.478-04:002011-08-05T13:24:01.478-04:00There's nothing like that acrid reek of mouldy...There's nothing like that acrid reek of mouldy book. I don't know where you are in America (it sounds like somewhere wet) but I am told that if you leave books out in the sun for days on end it sorts out the stink. Doesn't work in England, I can tell you for a fact, so I presume you need a higher ambient temp than we manage here.

It's good to read of a new library being built. Is it the same size as the old, or has the local authority seized the opportunity to downsize?Jane Badgerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02628233623713926723noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5609001996482522007.post-34291719616923497222011-08-04T23:52:54.719-04:002011-08-04T23:52:54.719-04:00Oh, moldy books! Putting them in a sealed container with a large amount of baking soda can reduce some of the mold odor.

I found a whole stash of Elizabeth Goudge novels for free one time, and I ended up having to throw them out. Same thing with a bag full of mid-century spy thrillers by Helen MacInnes. ( I'm really into early to mid-century genre fiction right now). Unfortunately I've got fairly serious mold allergies verging on asthma, so I have to draw the line sometimes.

I've never read Valley of the Ponies (at first I thought you were talking about Yesterday's Horses). I just ordered it through my library system, and discovered along the way that they have a pretty good number of Patsey Gray books as well.
